Samuel Johnson once wrote, “[W]hen a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” London is a fun and vibrant city. It offers a wealth of food, historical landmarks, theatre and so much more. If you’re planning a weekend trip, there’s so much to pack in. You will need pan carefully and prioritise.

Planning Ahead

Plan ahead as much as possible. The thing with London is that there is so much choice. This is good and bad. It’s good in the sense that you will never run out of options. But it can take a while to reach a decision. Read as many guidebooks as you can and look at online reviews. Make a list of what you want to do over the weekend and then narrow down the options. If you want to visit a museum, list the options and look at scheduled exhibitions. If you want to go paintball shooting, make a list of London Paintball Sites.

Check proximity and ensure you can get from place to place in good time. If you’re stuck, read our article on twelve wonderful things to do in London.

Getting Around

London is a large and thriving city. It covers around 1,579 square kilometres. It is likely the places you intend to visit will be spread out. Work out how you will get from A to B and the time it will take. Remember to factor in extra time for rush hour.

London’s red buses are iconic. They can be slow, depending on the time of day. But they are a great way to see London. If you have time, consider an open top bus tour.

London Underground or the Tube provides a direct route to most places. Familiarise yourself with the Tube Map before you leave. Savings can be made by purchasing a Visitor Oyster Card.

If you’re feeling active, consider hiring a ‘Boris Bike’. London has a bicycle hire scheme with docking stations throughout the city.

And don’t forget boats. If you’re travelling along the Thames route, there are many ferries. We recommend the trip from London Bridge to Greenwich.

Somewhere to Eat and Sleep

London is full of hotels, B&Bs and hostels. Work out your budget and search online. Remember to read traveller reviews to get a good indication of what you can expect for your money. If you want to experience London like a real Londoner, then consider renting a flat or house through Airbnb.

There are thousands of bars, restaurants, cafes, and places to eat in London. The whole spectrum of food is available. The difficult part is trying to narrow it down. Again, online reviews will help here. And check out this article for some of the best restaurants.

London is a beautiful city. You could visit for years on end and still discover new and exciting things to do and see. It’s a heady mixture of history and new and changing attractions. Plan ahead as much as possible and check out your transport routes. Create a schedule but allow for spontaneity. Enjoy all it has to offer.
