On Sunday morning, I joined some friends for a brisk hike up the Newlands Forest Contour Path. Fresh air, natural surroundings, spectacular Cape Town views while getting the blood flowing is the perfect way to start a Sunday morning.
In fact, I felt so great after Sunday’s hike that I’ve decided to stick to one of my 2015 goals and am running the SPAR Womens 10km Challenge on Sunday morning. I haven’t run much at all in the past year so I plan to test myself tomorrow evening to see if I can manage 8km along the Sea Point promenade after work. Hopefully some upbeat tunes on my iPod and a spectacular summer sunset will nudge me past my usual 5km run route.
Worst case scenario – I walk 3/4 of the race and nurse my broken knees at the end. Hopefully, I’ll surprise myself and will enjoy the run in aid of a great organisation – Operation Smile.
Operation Smile South Africa provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe.
One day I plan to walk the Camino Santiago in Spain in support of this charity as smiles just make the world a better place. It takes 30 days to complete the pilgrimage so I need to figure out a way to source the time and funds but what’s stopping me? Nothing. Watch this space (over the next year or two).
