I recently traveled the mammoth journey from USA to South Africa and back again. 36 hours of hanging around airports and sitting in cramped airplane seats is pleasant for the first 10 hours but then you start to daydream of a shower and comfortable bed.
These are three of my travel hygiene tips to keep you smelling and feeling fresh on those long trips around the globe.
1. Pack a dry face cloth with a bit of face wash in a zip-lock bag. When you feel like your pits are attracting stares from fellow travelers, head to the nearest restroom. Wet the face cloth and wipe your face, neck, shoulders, chest and arm pits. Finish off with some deodorant to feel fresh and ready for the next leg of your trip.
2. Carry eye drops with you. I always carry a bottle of eye drops in my hand bag. I find that my eyes get dry, red and agitated on airplanes. Also, when you haven’t slept in about 30 hours your eyes need and deserve some TLC.
3. Pack your own toothbrush and toothpaste (in a zip-lock bag) as the airplane toiletry packs aren’t great. Brush your teeth after your main meal, before you try sleep to avoid waking up with smelly dog breath. At each airport lay-over, brush your teeth to help your mouth feel clean and minty fresh. Beware of the location’s water quality i.e. rinse your mouth with bottled water if in a foreign third-world country where your body’s immune system is not use to the water.
These three travel hygiene tips will ensure that you feel more human upon arrival and will make that welcoming hug as pleasant as it should be.
Safe travels everyone.
